DEAD GRANDMA!! World Premiere!

I realized it's been forever and a half since I've updated my blog... Well now is a better time than ever, what with the presidential election coming up and all.

Anyway, I had a busy summer which recently morphed into an even busier fall! Around May I came back to my old stomping grounds at Yo Gabba Gabba for season four! It's been a blast working with old friends, new friends, special guest friends and everyone else associated with this show. You can watch some our theme day lunch time costume contest shennanagans HERE! I'll post some of my favorites later!

In August I packed my red suitcase and headed off to Silver Falls Oregon to shoot THE DANGEROUS ADVENTURES OF LEROY THOMAS! (My 30 minute short film!) There's a lot happening with the project right now that I'm really excited about! More updates on that later too! We recently became indieWIRE's project of the week! You can read the article HERE!

Finally! Last but not least... my webseries DEAD GRANDMA was finally released!!!!!! The first two episodes are up and you can check back every Thursday 12pm EST for new episodes being released now through Thanksgiving!

I directed a series of Saturday morning-esque commercials to be released with Dead Grandma (which by the way is still a thing and will be released on the internet AND television very shortly! That's right... Television! Stay tune for more news on that). Anyway, I decided to upload one of the commercials "Bucket of Water" in it's full length glory. I hope this is as fun to watch as it was to make!

Personal Space Invader

If I had side project (you know, from the band that I have right now?) I would call it "PERSONAL SPACE INVADER". We would only play electronic experimental noise and maybe throw in a few math equations here and there to spice things up.

The idea came to me last week when I was encountered by three different people in the hallways of Art Center. Each one of them stood awkwardly close for a casual conversation... only to move in awkwardly closer and closer as the conversation continued.

I tried several techniques to normalize the space between us, but as it turns out, personal space invaders are also NOT afraid of making rapid adjustments to get right back in the game! Each one of these personal space invasions ended in a surprise grand finale! One grabbed my hand, the other massaged my shoulders then felt my beard and the last one fixed my hair so it wasn't in my eyes anymore. Two students, one teacher and one very confused me.

Who were these people and how did they get to be the way they are? They seem to be living happy fulfilling lives. Maybe I could be one of them some day??

Anyways... for now I have my fake electronic side project. This would be the cover of our first EP.

I decided to scan in photos from this old 3D collage I shot and constructed a while back. Minus it's brief move to the Yo Gabba Gabba cast and crew art show earlier this year, it's just been hanging in my kitchen collecting dust and waiting to be featured in some sort of project.... like a music video? Well, that's exactly what happened. I decided to make it the back drop for the eerie blue zombie city featured in the video! If you live anywhere near old town Pasadena or the MOCA in down town LA you might recognize a few of these buildings. Or maybe you live nearby and have never seen any of these buildings before. Or maybe you live far away but somehow recognize ALL of them. Who's to say? Who's to know? Those fat cats in Washington? Not likely.

Everyone in my directing class was given the same script to shoot. The assignment was to adapt it and make it our own. We had freedom to change about 10% of the script, but I took it much further and changed the setting, era and probably about 30% of the dialogue. Well... will you watch it?! Whaddya say?!

Here's the inside scoop on all of the characters:
-The first two shifty looking people at the very beginning are terrorists.
-Next, the brother and sister from Brazil. The girl is flying to New York to try and break out onto Broadway but her brother, who is chaperoning her travels, is trying to convince her to drop it all and go back home with him.
-The man with the hat and glasses studied a little Portuguese back in college and is trying to eavesdrop in on the conversation to see if he can still pick anything up.
-The girl tying her shoelace is on her way to visit her Grandma.
-Last but not least, the couple arguing over the tickets are married. The wife really wants a baby but the husband doesn't feel like he's ready yet.

Weekly shooting assignment #3 (An argument)

I had this idea a few months back after spending an evening in old town Pasadena passing by multiple classy restaurants filled with couples seated right next to the windows having (what seemed to me to be) the best time of their lives! Their conversations (even though I couldn't hear them) seemed so interesting, the lighting in the restaurants was so warm and inviting, everyone had huge smiles on their faces and whatever they were eating looked like the most delicious possible food anyone could order! I wanted in! I wanted to be apart it! And in a weird way, I felt like I WAS apart of it... and now you can too! So sit back, relax and enjoy us enjoying someone else's evening!

Shout outs and thank yous go out to Courtney (see more of her work on the upcoming series DEAD GRANDMA, as well as in the past 4-ish or so episodes of 30 Rock!), Nate Fackrell, Mari B and Tiffani Barth on this one! You guys are the best!

Hands down, one of the scariest stories I heard while I was living in Japan was an urban myth about a woman named "Kuchi Sake Onna".
Legend has it that one night she was attacked on the streets by a man who cut the sides of her face. Now she roams the streets at night covering her scars and approaching people to ask if they think she's pretty. After they agree she reveals her face and asks if they think she's pretty still. If they run or scream she pulls out her knife and cuts their face as well. Scary right? Right!

It was a perspective assignment for school so that explains the random building in the background.

Dear Blog,
Oh what a day. Today I went to directing 2 tech training, washed my car, wrote some stories, got attacked by a legion of pigeons (apparently I was sitting at their favorite bench with no bread), made some pasta, went to movie night, then came home and designed some t-shirts for Mummy Space Island. Technically they were homework for my digital illustration class, but I would've made them anyways so you tell me, teehee! Oh blog, what a crazy last couple of weeks it has been! :) More tomorrow!

This is the second installment of the "Brennan" series and oddly enough my most controversial project to date! It was banned by my school's film department chair and I was disqualified from receiving a grade!
Reason being: I didn't have an official "studio teacher" on set for the kids. Oh well, we all had fun making and laughing at it later!

This one's been on the back burner for a while and I decided to finish it recently. It may or may not be based on my first cousin once removed (Brittany, you want to help me out with the exact relation here?) Annette Funicello's hit song, "Pineapple Princess".

...and finally this last gem, or burried treasure.. or deblume? Yeah, lets call it a deblume! This last deblume was an assignment from photo class I took last semester. Mom was a good sport and agreed to help me out. I'm glad we were able to dig up my old MC Hammer pants for her to wear on her head.. cuz without them it just wouldn't be the same!

My friend who is expecting a baby in a few weeks commissioned me to make robot illustrations to hang up in their nursery. It's always a challenge to make original looking robot characters after working for Yo Gabba! I don't know how many times I've finished a robot sketch and been like, "Wait, that's Plex." It's kinda like when you sit down with a guitar and start writing a song. You think it's amazing and you're totally onto something fresh and new... but it's only a matter of time before you realize you just rewrote "Hey Jude" by The Beatles. Anyways, hopefully I pulled it off and hopefully she likes them!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you know that the new episode of Yo Gabba Gabba featuring Jack Black will finally air on Nick Jr. Friday, April 3rd at 1:30pm ET/PT!

I animated the video game segments for this episode and also was the voice of the carrot who goes to the "party" in jack black's tummy!!

No Time! (theatrical trailer)

My car broke down when I was going to school up at BYU last year and for a few months I was forced to rely on the public transportation system. I remember rushing out my apartment in the morning around 6:15am (no matter how hard I tried to wake up earlier) in hopes of catching my 6:19am bus! If for some reason I didn't make it, which happened quite a few times, my entire schedule would be thrown off completely. To get from Provo to Salt Lake required two bus transfers and one short train ride. Missing one transfer would cause a chain reaction that would destroy the universe... the universe where I get to class on time. If I made it to the bus before it took off I would arrive at my final destination in front of the Gateway mall across the street from the Salt Lake Center usually about 3 minutes before my 9:30am class would start! What I could never figure out was how everyone around me was so calm. Didn't they have schedules to keep, places to be, classes to fail? It seemed like everyone else was just taking it easy with out a care in the world. It was like there only purpose was to prevent me from making it to class on time. I remember Grandmas sloooowly pulling out their change purses taking out what seemed to be one penny at a time until they met the $1.40 bus fare. When the bus finally dropped me off at my across the street from my school ir seemed like all of the mothers with strollers, people in wheel chairs, slow walkers, picture takers and lolly gaggers had formed an alliance to keep me from making it to class on time!

One morning while riding the bus I pulled out my note book and wrote a short story (inspired by my experiences) which eventually became my latest movie, No Time!

Some of you have already seen it in it's various stages of production and the responses are always the same, "This is my life everyday!!!" I'm excited to finally announce that we're on the last leg of post production and the official No Time premiere party will take place at the Art Center LA Times Theater in Pasadena Califronia! Details to follow...

When I was living in Japan as a missionary, my companions and I were often invited by local elementary schools and other public program centers to give special presentations on American culture as the token "gaijin"s of the community. I spent two Christmas's in Japan, and both years my companions and I were asked by multiple schools to play Santa.. BOTH of us... at the SAME time.. in the SAME room. This always brought up concerns. First off, I was pretty sure that Japanese kids were sharp enough to realize that there couldn't be two Santa's in the same place at once. I mean, at least ONE of us had to be an imposter, right?!! WRONG!! The santa clones were never questioned and it was somewhere around that time that i realized.. basically anything goes in Japan. (as you can tell by the presence of the "christmas bunny and "december monkey" and in this photo)

Halloween was another interesting holiday in Japan, probably because it doesn't exist and we were always asked to dress up and show the kids how to trick or treat! One Halloween stands out in particular.. we we're asked by an elementary school tot come and talk to the kids about trick or treating. While we were waiting to do our presentation they announced a very special guest, then seriously OUT OF NOWHERE this 6'7" giant of a gaijin from England BURSTS through the doors dressed up in a white sheet with eye holes yelling, "HAPPY BLOODY HALLOW-WEEEEN!!!". Underneath his costume he looked something like a frazzled recently escaped mental hospital patient played by Gene Wilder, but with extra spice of British pazaz! I've never seen a more animated energetic person in my life! I remember he ran to the stage and stood

towering over the kids sitting on the ground and in the thickest of british accients yelling, "TODAY IS ALLOW-WEEEN!!!" (he'd pause to look around the room), "Do yoooou know what we doo for allow-ween?!" Then out of nowhere he got right in this little girls face and yelled, "WHAT DO YOU BLOODY BLOOMIN DO FOR BLOODY BLOOMIN ALLOW-WEEN??!!!!" The little girl immediately started to cry and our tall british friend decided to take off his sheet and get right up in her face to assure her that he wasn't truly a ghost, but just a giant scary british version of Gene Wilder on crack!! This made matters worse and subsequently none of us were asked to come back the following Halloween! Well, maybe we were.. I really don't know, I was transfered a few months later. The fact of the matter is, Japan was freakin rad and I miss the crap out of it!

now for the REAL artwork!! most of the time when i draw a friend or family member, it's never intentional! i always start off just drawing and if it ends up looking like someone i know i'll be like, "ooohh, hey.. i mean, yeeeeah!" then it just kinda evolves from there. sometimes it's convenient, sometimes it's not, most of the time it's an unexplained phenomenom.. you know? like that show crossing over with jordan. anyways, this illustration is of my good friend, hannah lillywhite! she stared in the love and horror movie aaron white and i made last semester up at school. here's the link if you want to watch it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCPvbaD3NWY

in other news, my friends emma jacobs and jed briggs sealed the deal this past weekend. emma handed out canvases to some of her friends and family members requesting artwork of her and her husband to display at her wedding! she included a fabric sample of her wedding colors with each canvas and told us to go to town. it was a creative idea and really interesting to see what people came up up with! i decided to paint emma and jed as an elderly couple in their "later" years. I cut out the fabric sample and used it for emma's dress and jed's tie. it was a rushed projects and i finished it as i was walking out the door, but here it is!!

Hey everyone!!

I hope this blog post finds you in good health and wealth!! My summer has been pretty exciting so far! I've been spending most my days working on season 2 of Yo Gabba Gabba, which has been a total blast! On the side I was hired by Lynda.com, an amazing online adobe tutorial site, to create some artwork for an upcoming training video they are currently producing! My friends Chad and Todd turned me onto the site a while ago and I've been a huge fan ever since! I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in learning after effects, illustrator, flash, etc.

I thought I would share some of the art work I was asked to make. They requested a medieval theme..

In other news, i took a trip up to the bay area this past weekend and had a total blast! The street perfomers were hilarious, the golden gate bridge was orange and the claim chowder was amazing! We even tried to look for the street where they filmed the opening credits of Full House but had no luck.. oh well.. maybe next time?

so i've been working on character concepts for an animated short i've had on the backburner for a while now. it's exciting to see them slowly coming to life!! i'll upload some up more soon if you promise to come back and look!

this next one is a quick teaser from another animated short i'm making, "javad the snake charmer!" it's short, but fun! probably the most exciting part about this whole short story is the fact that my good friend chad from wedgekase is composing the soundtrack! watch it for a quick sample of his melodic genius!

okay! here's the deal!! yesterday was beyond amazing!!! enough said about that. ah, who am i kidding?? not nearly enough has been said or could ever be said about yesterday!! i'll post more on that later though! anyways, lets get down to the "nitty gritty", there's ton of art work i want to dump on here over the next few days but i'm way super busy right now! so until then.. here are a few quick sketches...

i did this on the back of a flyer someone gave me on campus! it's a self portrait accurately portraying my feelings towards people who litter!!

these were fun! lately i've been trying to improve my quick action attack sketch technique, so there's a ton of random loose sketches of friends lying around the apartment. maybe someday someone will find one wedged between the couch cushions only to realize it's their GREAT GREAT GRANDPA!! hopefully the management replaces the couches by then, but if not... my legacy will live on!!

RANDOM THOUGHT: if i had it my way, everyone would be eating a breakfast burrito right now!

In my intro to animation class we had to create a walk cycle so I decided to make mine into an overweight chef with a proud/cheesy grin walking around carrying a hot dinner tray! It was all done in traditional animation, but I ended up really liking the character design and redoing him later in illustrator... and you can take that to the bank!!

(For anyone who's known me over the years will probably recognize a bunch of these cars in the background.

FISH BOWL STORY WORLD PREMIERE!!!!

Ok, so here it goes!! The world premiere of my Fish Bowl Story Movie!!! For all the energy and creativity I put into this animation you'd think I'd be able to come up with a better title, huh? WELL I COULDN'T!!! SO THERE!! Anyways, I wrote this story about 2 years ago when I first got home from mission in Japan and I'm glad I finally had the chance to animate it! The characters are loosely based off myself and a companion I had who will remain nameless...... ah who am I kidding.... it was Andrew Grimly!! I always considered myself to be the orange fish until last semester when I had a room mate who I ended up basing the orange fish's personality on completely! When it comes down to it though I think I see a lot of myself in both fish. Basically this is a story of me battling myself in a fight for the finish... ENJOY!!
